This short volume is much more than a pocket book about ‘sociology as a science’; it is quite simply Boudon's intellectual autobiography. This genre is quite rare in contemporary sociology and among contemporary sociologists, only Pierre Bourdieu has produced a similarly self-reflective autobiography and memoir (Esquisse pour une autoanalyse). But La sociologie comme science is not just a book about Boudon by Boudon. It is also a short dictionary of key Boudonian concepts and, above all, an auto-critical overview of the author's writing. As indicated in the Introduction, La sociologie comme science is a follow-up to a paper written in 1996, ‘Pourquoi devenir sociologue?’ (published in Revue française de science politique). The present volume introduces more details from Boudon's academic and personal life. The book consists of five chapters, intertwined with many autobiographical details and reminiscences. The book is written in a distinctive Boudonian style that combines humour with scientific rigor.
