This entry examines the origins of the concept of the informal sector and reviews how it has been defined, the methodologies proposed to investigate its operations, and the relationship between formal and informal sector activities. It discusses tensions among anthropologists, policy makers, and economists with respect to the appropriate unit of analysis of informal‐sector employment and workers and their contributions to national economies. It also traces sociocultural and political dimensions associated with informal economies and how they have undergone transformations in light of globalization processes
