Scholars and travelers have been interested in the music of other cultures and regions of the world for several centuries but only since the twentieth century has such inquiry cohered into an identifiable disciplinary field of study. Ethnomusicology is a relatively new field; the term first began to be widely used in Europe and the United States with the founding of the Society for Ethnomusicology in 1954. From its earliest iteration, “ethnomusicology” came to mean the study of human musical diversity—that is, music in its cultural context—from a variety of perspectives, including (perhaps especially) anthropology
