    Open Access•Rene T A Lysloff•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2018

Scholars and travelers have been interested in the music of other cultures and regions of the world for several centuries but only since the twentieth century has such inquiry cohered into an identifiable disciplinary field of study. Ethnomusicology is a relatively new field; the term first began to be widely used in Europe and the United States with the founding of the Society for Ethnomusicology in 1954. From its earliest iteration, “ethnomusic…

  • Worlding Music in Jogjakarta

    Rene T A Lysloff•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 9

Narratives of globalization are often about coping with inevitable and massive economic, technocultural, and societal change. Similarly, studies of music and globalization tend to be theoretically oriented and focus on large-scale transformation (media, industry, nation, etc.) rather than on local and individual innovation and ingenuity. This essay is a close to the ground ethnography of musicians (two, in particular) from the city of Jogjakarta1…

  • A Wrinkle in Time

    Rene T A Lysloff•ARTICLE•Asian Theatre Journal•1993•References: 4

This article is about a wrinkle in time, what the writer Madeleine L'Engle whimsically calls a tesseract, when the space-time continuum seems to fold up on itself, bringing together alternate times and places. Specifically, it is about a wrinkle in the flow of dramatic time during performance of Javanese shadow puppet theatre, or wayang kulit. This wrinkle brings about a peculiarly sustained moment of timelessness squarely in the middle of an all…

    Rene T A Lysloff•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•1990

T hough I didn't realize it at the time, the piece I'm My Own Walkman, had a special significance for me while I was conducting fieldwork in Java in 1986-87. I had a cassette-recording of Bobby McFerrin (an album called The Voice) back then, and I used to listen to it through a set of headphones late at night as it played on my Sony Walkman.3 Aside from being an example of incredible vocal technique and versatility, the piece struck me as rather …

  • A New Approach to the Classification of Sound-Producing Instruments

    Rene T A Lysloff, Jim Matson•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•1985•Cited by: 3•References: 4

The systematic classification of musical instruments requires a fresh approach. Most existing systems classify museum artifacts, employing a rigid set of distinctions inappropriate for systematic integration of worldwide instrumentalia and human behavior included in producing sound. Central to our approach is a reconsideration of the object to be classified. The domain of our classification includes the dynamic interaction between instruments and…
