This study examines how child maltreatment influences teen dating violence victimization and perpetration, and how these experiences, in turn, affect adolescent depression. Data were drawn from 844 participants in the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study. Results from moderated mediation models show that child maltreatment is linked to both victimization and perpetration of teen dating violence, which lead to depression (teen dating violence victimization β = .09, p < .01; teen dating violence perpetration (β = .16, p < .01). These relationships were stronger for boys than for girls (teen dating violence victimization β = .11, p < .001 vs. β = .06, p < .001; teen dating violence perpetration β = .19, p < .001 vs. β = .12, p < .001). Findings of this study support the efforts to detect and treat adolescent depression among those who have experienced childhood maltreatment and teen dating violence. Also, such interventions should take the specific needs of boys into account, given the higher risk this study identifies among them.
