This article presents a discussion on concepts of continuing teacher education based on a concrete experience—planned and developed between 2018 and 2024—involving the university and the municipal education system, as well as teaching, research, and extension. The empirical realities, according to their characteristics, led to a theoretical and practical debate on Rural Education, given the nature of the schools served by an extension project, as will be presented throughout the article. The methodological procedures were based on participatory research, involving a series of practical interventions with the schools. The actions developed for this education process included: the offering of a specialization course for schoolteachers; educational support for students from the participating schools; and joint interventions with the communities of these school institutions. With the development and completion of the activities, formative processes and intervention projects were carried out. Based on these experiences, it is possible to affirm that research in education is a practice that benefits schools and their communities, the university and research, as defended by authors such as Paulo Freire and Carlos Brandão, who advocate for a form of science grounded in reality as a means of transforming it.
