My contribution is set within the “crisis of history” at the end of the twentieth century. It draws on Sergio Sevilla’s ideas about a crisis affecting both historical practice and the philosophy of history, understood as part of a deeper challenge to the emancipatory project of modernity. It considers the perspectives of Isaiah Berlin and Hans-Georg Gadamer, as well as a critical reading of Hayden White’s Metahistory , in contrast with Lawrence Stone, Roger Chartier and Georg Iggers. Finally, it addresses the growing importance of the notion of experience in historiography since the 1970s.
