The Republic of the Marshall Islands, located in the Pacific region most commonly referred to as Micronesia, recently assumed a new and more independent political status after nearly 400 years of colonization. We examine the history of language issues and education policies in the Marshall Islands, and provide an overview of administrative, financial, curricular and staffing features of current language and education programs. A summary of negative school outcomes which occur at all levels of the Marshallese education system and possible causes for these outcomes are considered from both infrastructural and global perspectives. An immersion model of bilingual Marshallese-English education is proposed. We argue for additive bilingualism as the most appropriate model for the Marshallese student population
