VAMOUs writers have approached the socialization process from the point of view of the self, or the self-concept. The typical position is that essentially, the self is a complex of reflexive attitudes that arise in the process of socialization. x The individual develops a set of attitudes, feelings, perceptions, and evaluations of himself as an object.2 To many writers, the concept of the self seems to refer primarily to the conscious system of attitudes and values which an individual has toward his own person.3 Certain writers have suggested that the self consists of different levels of experience.4 Bingham Dai, whose framework is used in this study, suggests, for example, that human personality, on its higher levels of integration may be thought of as an organization of selves or self-concepts.5 The two concepts, primary self and secondary selves, are critical to Dai's theory. Although Dai uses the concept of self in describing the primary self, he is suggesting that the primary self is not a conscious phenomenon. The primary self does not refer to any self picture the individual has of his own person. Rather, Dai uses this concept to refer to the personality as a whole.6 The primary self appears to be
