Territorial restructuring is once again on the political agenda in Sweden. Thirty years after the completion of a comprehensive and controversial amalgamation reform, which drastically reduced the number of municipalities, a major new reshaping of the sub-national map is under way. In February 2007, a multi-party parliamentary committee — the Committee on Public Sector Responsibilities — unanimously suggested a reform of the intermediate (regional or county council) level of government. If it is carried out, it will represent an important break with the past. Not only is it the most far-reaching reform of this level of government since the seventeenth century, it also alters important features of the Swedish unitary state.KeywordsCentral GovernmentCounty CouncilRegional ReformRegional Economic DevelopmentPolitical PartiThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
