This chapter examines the military activity of the Attalids for the whole of the dynasty, notably by looking at the evidence of epigraphy, and taking a number of angles (how important warfare was; why the Attalids fought; how they fought; what the nature of the Attalid state was). The main findings are the curious combination of warlikeness, small scale means, and vulnerability; the importance of Mysia and Mysia Abbaeitis; and the importance of warfare in social control and state formation for this little kingdom, which was not so different from the other Hellenistic super-power states.
