The poet, teacher and activist Burhan Mkelle is here introduced as a typical Muslim modern, active on several arenas that emerged in the interwar period. His biography, as a first-generation Comorian brought up in Zanzibar, is also discussed as representative of the multi-ethnic Zanzibari society. His Sufi affiliations are also considered as part of his reformist orientation. Finally, this chapter discusses Burhan Mkelle as a “constant” among educated Zanzibaris who traveled routinely to far-flung places.
