Business ethics is a form of applied philosophy. Its research domain focuses on the evaluation of the moral dimension of business activity at various levels – including individual decisions, corporate strategies, policies and procedures, and the rules of the economic order. The main development of business ethics can be traced back to the 1980s, even if its conceptual roots date back to the Greek philosophers. The three main ethical theories applied in business ethics are Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, and virtue ethics. From an organizational behavior perspective, the role and effectiveness of ethics and compliance programs and the field of behavioral ethics are very relevant research streams in contemporary business ethics.
