Many electoral changes of the twentieth century cannot now be reconstructed. In the last chapter we drew a broad description of the long-term changes of party strength which have accompanied the movement of successive political generations through the British electorate. But we were able to say little as to short-run changes within various eras, changes that depended primarily on the shifting preferences of people who continued as members of the electorate. However, when we come to the early 1960s we can say a good deal about these more intricate patterns of change. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
