Language ideologies that are operational in the language of popular culture are usually examined through two channels: (a) a performative channel that examines language performance, and (b) an affiliative channel that examines consumer (especially fan's) reactions toward language use. Within both channels language can be assessed as possessing adequate “authority” or “authenticity.” While “authority” is usually derived from the “standard language ideology” (SLI), “authenticity” is more frequently relevant to language in popular culture.
