Among the many prominent studies on race relations in America, John Dollard's work Caste and Class in a Southern Town , first published in 1937, continues to be most influential piece of research. John Dollard was an American psychologist and social scientist. He put forth a caste–class thesis that constitutes the psychological and psychoanalytical perspective on how caste and class shaped race relations in the Deep South. In this research Dollard used the caste lens to understand the relationship between whites and Negroes in Southerntown—a fictitious name given to the town in the Deep South that was his research site. Influenced heavily by the work of Llyod Warner, he referred to whites and Negroes in Southerntown as two dominant caste groups.
