Augusta Raurica, modern Augst in Switzerland, was officially established as a Roman colony in Gaul by the Roman senator and consul Lucius Munatius Plancus in 44 BCE . There is no physical evidence for occupation in this early period, but the colony was probably refounded 15–10 BCE by the emperor Augustus.
