Numerian (born ca. 255/260 ce ; PLRE I: 634; PIR 2 A 1564; RE 174), younger son of the emperor Carus (Marcus Aurelius Carus Augustus), was Roman emperor from 283 to 284. Assessment is complicated by his presentation in the sources as an excellent character (unlike his debauched elder brother Carinus (Marcus Aurelius Carinus Augustus)), with great skill in oratory, and able to compete in poetry with Nemesianus (SHA Car. 11.1–2).
