To understand the Arabic standardization process, linguists examine the different sociohistorical factors that link the Arabic language to the identity and history of its speakers. Arabic standardization is premised on choosing speech forms throughout the Arab peninsula. The standardization of Arabic was born out of the need for cross‐dialectal communication during the expansion of the Islamic empire. The expansion of literacy and knowledge production expedited the function of Arabic as the lingua franca for nations beyond the Arab peninsula. Arabs historically focused on maintaining Arabic away from the influence of foreign languages. The maintenance of the Arabic language is motivated by Arabs' ties to their history and identity, which reinforces conformity and stability of the language.
