This chapter regiments Kant's various formulations of the categorical imperative in the Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals by arguing that the two different versions of what Kant describes as the third formula — the ‘formula of autonomy’ and the ‘formula of the kingdom of ends’ — represent respectively the consequences of the systematic application or ‘complete determination’ of the first two formulas, the ‘formula of autonomy’ representing the systematic application of the ‘formula of universal law’, and the ‘formula of the kingdom of ends’ representing the systematic application of the ‘formula of humanity as an end in itself’.
