A double legionary fortress of 36 ha (89 acres), on a terrace above the Rhine at its confluence with the Main, was founded in 13/12 BCE in support of Augustus' ambition to conquer territory east of the Rhine, to be masterminded by his stepson Drusus. However, Drusus died in 9 BCE , much mourned by his troops. The 19.6 m (64 ft) high funerary monument outside the fortress to the southeast (“Eichelstein” or “Drususstein”) may well be a cenotaph built in his memory.
