Mogontiacum (Mainz), Germany
Mogontiacum is the site of a double legionary fortress first established under Augustus and enlarged and refurbished on several occasions later. It was occupied into the fourth century. Around it grew a civilian settlement of some 200 hectares, which became the capital of Upper Germany ca. 90 ce . In the fourth century it too had its own defensive walls. Two auxiliary forts are also known nearby. A funerary monument known as the Edelstein may be …
Colonia Ulpia Traiana (Xanten, Germany)
Xanten is the nearest modern town to the site of the Roman town of Colonia Ulpia Traiana , founded in ca. 99 ce . It was previously, for all of the first century ce , a settlement of the local Ciberni tribe. Excavation has revealed much about the defenses and some of the public and private buildings within, including classical‐style and Romano‐Celtic temples, a large bath, and an amphitheater. Its heyday was in the second century; it was damaged …
Economic Development in the Middle East
This new edition examines how development in the Middle East is being influenced by global economic change. This comparative textbook focuses on the region’s strengths, and highlights development success, especially in the Gulf, Turkey and Israel. The major structural changes in the economies of the Middle East are analysed and current employment challenges are discussed. The impact of demographic changes is considered, notably the dramatic decli…
Fiftieth Anniversary of Middle Eastern Studies
Mogontiacum (Mainz)
A double legionary fortress of 36 ha (89 acres), on a terrace above the Rhine at its confluence with the Main, was founded in 13/12 BCE in support of Augustus' ambition to conquer territory east of the Rhine, to be masterminded by his stepson Drusus. However, Drusus died in 9 BCE , much mourned by his troops. The 19.6 m (64 ft) high funerary monument outside the fortress to the southeast (“Eichelstein” or “Drususstein”) may well be a cenotaph bui…
Vetera (Birten, Germany)
Vetera was the local name (probably meaning “Water”) of two successive Roman legionary fortresses on the Fürstenberg near the modern village of Birten; they lay at the ancient confluence of the Rhine and the Lippe, 2 km southeast of the later Roman colonia of Xanten, Germany.
Economic Development in Saudi Arabia
The changing political situation in the Middle East poses challenges for the economies of the region, and some see none more vulnerable to collapse than Saudi Arabia's. Yet as this study demonstrates, the fundamentals of the Kingdom's economy are relatively robust, as over three quarters of GDP is accounted for by the non-oil sector, and impressive modern industries have been established, notably in petrochemicals. The financial system functions …

The contribution by economists to middle eastern studies (1973–1998)
More economists have been involved in Middle Eastern studies during the last twenty‐five years than ever before, and economists from the region itself now rightly play a dominant role. Inevitably amongst economists there have been disagreements and different schools of thought, especially over the role of the state and the desirability of privatization and structural adjustment policies. There have also been different definitions of rentier state…

Jordan's Trade: Past Performance and Future Prospects
Many Middle Eastern governments are seeking to liberalize their trade policies. There is a desire to abandon policies based on import substitution through protectionism, and instead concentrate on export promotion. Advisors from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) urge governments to be less interventionist, and to create an environment where the provate sector can have freer rein. It is hoped that private entrepreneurs can r…

Middle Eastern economics in Durham
Durham University has for more than half a century specialized in Middle Eastern studies, with the teaching of Arabic language and literature. As a consequence of this long-standing tradition, in 1961 it was decided, in accordance with the recommendations of the Hayter committee, to establish Middle Eastern posts in the Social Science Departments in the university. Under this Hayter scheme funds were made available to finance two lectureships in …

Economic change and re‐interpretation of Islamic social values
I would like at the outset to emphasize my own position and background. I come to this topic not as an Islamic scholar, and I know that many of you are much more qualified to talk about Islam and Islamic ideas than I am. Rather my training is in economics, essentially Western economics, and the approach I must take when examining Islamic economic ideas and their implications is basically from a Western perspective. At its core there are several a…

The developmental impact of Egypt's import liberalisation
There is a growing consensus in international bodies such as the IMF, the World Bank and GATT, that developing countries should gradually liberalize their import regimes. To some extent this reflects the increasing influence of free market thinkers in these organizations, who believe that government control of imports results in price distortions and supply bottlenecks. It is believed the developmental effect of such controls is negative overall,…
