Amphiaraos was a seer and king of Argos. Fighting against Thebes, he was swallowed up by the earth as he was fleeing, and was subsequently worshiped as a hero and a chthonic god. His main sanctuary was in Oropos on the Boeotian–Attic border, where he was said to appear in dreams. From the fifth century bce to the third century ce , Oropos was a famous and prosperous healing sanctuary.
