Document reliefs are regularly used to provide a dated framework for discussions of the stylistic development of Attic sculpture of the second half of the fifth and fourth centuries. Such discussions often fail to recognize, however, that document reliefs, like architectural relief or the various types of grave relief, constitute a distinctive class of Attic sculpture with characteristics of its own. Any attempt to describe the stylistic development of the reliefs or to use them as comparanda for dating must take into account the traits that set them apart.
