  • Style And Chronology

    Carol L Lawton, Carol Lawton•CHAPTER•Attic document reliefs•1995

Document reliefs are regularly used to provide a dated framework for discussions of the stylistic development of Attic sculpture of the second half of the fifth and fourth centuries. Such discussions often fail to recognize, however, that document reliefs, like architectural relief or the various types of grave relief, constitute a distinctive class of Attic sculpture with characteristics of its own. Any attempt to describe the stylistic developm…

  • Iconography

    Carol L Lawton, Carol Lawton•CHAPTER•Attic document reliefs•1995

The widespread tendency to regard document reliefs as indistinguishable from votive reliefs is primarily the result of the attention paid to the formal characteristics of the reliefs at the expense of their content. Most document reliefs were set up in sanctuaries, indicating that they had a votive function, and the reliefs themselves, especially those on decrees concerning cults, resemble votive reliefs in a number of respects, yet document reli…

  • The Stelai

    Carol L Lawton, Carol Lawton•CHAPTER•Attic document reliefs•1995

Inscribed documents with reliefs were erected by a number of Attic institutions and groups, but in their content they fall predominantly into two main categories, honorary decrees for individuals, and alliances and other agreements with foreign states. They also occur, although much less frequently, on accounts and inventories, on documents concerning cults and sanctuaries, on public dedications, and on several unusual documents that do not fit i…

The author's new and illuminating work on the iconography of these reliefs shows how the gods, heroes, and other personifications were not simply decorative, but integral to the overall political message
