Forging language to describe and solve problems in the world is sometimes necessary. Prejudice and discrimination against people perceived to be “non‐native speakers” were causing problems in the foreign language education workplace worldwide before the word native‐speakerism was coined. Teachers classified as “native‐speakers” of a language can also be adversely affected. In this entry, conceptual foundations for research into native‐speakerism laid in the early 1990s are reviewed, before possible components of a post‐native‐speakerist shift are outlined in the form of shifts needed in the foreign language teacher educational activities and attributes. The beneficial role of plurilingualism in brain health and dementia prevention is also highlighted. Differing views on native‐speakerism are recognized, and readers are encouraged to actively seek areas of agreement and disagreement as research develops in this dynamic area through which language and society are simultaneously being forged in response to ongoing social problems.
