With few characters and little diversity of incident, Knights depends heavily on the interchange of speech, song, and recitative for variety and pace. The first, second, fourth and fifth songs are in metres predominant in Ach.: cretic, trochaic, and iambic, with a few dactyls. Dochmiacs are absent from the play: neither the chorus nor any of the characters gives way to the kind of uncontrolled emotion typically expressed in that metre.
