The Spartan Hyakinthia were held at Amyklai, in the local sanctuary of Apollo, in honor of Apollo and Hyakinthos. A well‐known myth told that Hyakinthos underwent metamorphosis into a flower, but according to Spartan tradition he acquired immortality through apotheosis. Hyakinthia, supposedly a vegetation cult and a youth initiation ceremony, were one of the major religious festivals in Sparta and Lakonia, and they are relatively well known, thanks to the allusions of the classical sources and the more systematic – although fragmentary – descriptions from authors of Hellenistic and Roman age.
