  • Taranto e l’enigma del tragos (PW 46 = Fo Q34). Oracoli, narrazioni locali, letteratura

    Open Access•Massimo Nafissi•ARTICLE•Mythos•2024

Myron vi inserì tra l’altro un proverbio, τὸ μεταξὺ Κορίνθου καὶ Σικυῶνος…

    Open Access•Massimo Nafissi•ARTICLE•Mythos•2020

This paper is part of a wider research project on the figurative program of the Throne of Amyklai and investigates six scenes described by Pausanias in 3.18.11-12: a controversial Hermes Dionysophoros, the introduction of Herakles to Olympus, the delivery of Achilleus to Cheiron, the abduction of Kephalos by Eos, the wedding of Kadmos and Harmonia, and the duel of Achilleus and Memnon. The analysis of the relevant literary and artistic sources sh…

  • Hyakinthia at Sparta

    Open Access•Massimo Nafissi•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2018

The Spartan Hyakinthia were held at Amyklai, in the local sanctuary of Apollo, in honor of Apollo and Hyakinthos. A well‐known myth told that Hyakinthos underwent metamorphosis into a flower, but according to Spartan tradition he acquired immortality through apotheosis. Hyakinthia, supposedly a vegetation cult and a youth initiation ceremony, were one of the major religious festivals in Sparta and Lakonia, and they are relatively well known, than…

  • Le iscrizioni del monumento per gli Ecatomnidi

    Massimo Nafissi•ARTICLE•Studi classici e orientali•2015

  • Gerousia

The Spartan gerousia is the best‐known Greek “council of elders.” As the role of the gerontes in Homer shows, such councils stemmed from Preclassical times, but the prestige of old age fueled the creation of gerousiai even into the imperial period.

  • Syssitia

Here and in Cretan cities messmates formed a basic subunit of the citizen body.
