There are times when the formal language in which company reports are couched seems, to the detached observer, to fail to fulfil its purpose. And if there was an occasion when Gold Fields might have departed from its customary restrained prose style and produced a report that was rather longer and more explanatory than usual (and perhaps expressed in simpler terms) it was the year 1959. For this was the year in which all the hard planning behind the scenes bore fruit. It was the year in which the company arrived at the most important turning-point in its history. No doubt there were excellent reasons why the changes that took place had to be described in laconic phrases. Nevertheless one is left wondering what the average Gold Fields’ shareholder, the man domiciled in Tunbridge Wells who held 100 ordinaries, made of the announcements that went out from 49 Moorgate.
