Gaius Verres (ca. 115–43 BCE ) was one of the Late Roman Republic's most notorious magistrates. He is known chiefly through the corpus of speeches published by the orator Cicero, stemming from a legal action against him brought on behalf of the cities and people of Sicily before the standing extortion court. The impact of the published speeches has so polluted the tradition against Verres that the true extent of his crimes may never be known (see, e.g., Juv. Sat . 3 on his later reputation).
