This chapter details the current state of the literature on unemployment and underemployment and explores how counselors and psychologists can take steps to address the unemployment and underemployment problems. It highlights the relations of several facets of underemployment to mental health and well-being. A number of global trends are contributing to the persistent issues of unemployment and underemployment in the United States and worldwide, and these trends are likely to continue into the future. Several theories have suggested that unemployment harms well-being by depriving people's ability to meet their basic needs, such as need for food, shelter, and clothing, and their psychological needs, such as needs for self-determination and social connection. Counselors and psychologists have increasingly expanded their roles to include prevention, advocacy, and social justice.
