In this chapter, the authors provide some background on the role of racial/ethnic disparities in educational and occupational attainment to provide a basis for argument that it is important to understand the role of racial/ethnic background in understanding influences on individuals' career- and work-related decisions. A great deal has been written about the large disparities in educational and occupational attainment between White European Americans and individuals from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds. They discuss the role that race and ethnicity may play in most of the major career theories and also review research on race and ethnicity that has been conducted in relation to these theoretical perspectives. Super's developmental theory is one of the most influential in vocational psychology.
