The communities where people live and socialize provide a convenient and logical unit of analysis for examining crime. Theories in this area of criminology regard crime as a function of the interaction between groups of people and their social and physical environments. Known as the social ecology of crime , this perspective has its origins in the Chicago School and initial research linking sociology and criminology. Early researchers described the emergence of crime in transitional urban areas as a consequence of social disorganization , and subsequent scholars determined that lack of social control is closely linked with ethnic heterogeneity , population mobility , and concentrated disadvantage . Absence of collective efficacy or capacity to mobilize is also a significant contributor to neighborhood crime levels. Furthermore, the neighborhood–crime connection has proved to be bidirectional, in that crime is capable of influencing community structure and is not merely the product of an adverse environment.
