At the western end of an alluvial plain of c.250 km2, on the site where later the city of Argos grew up, habitation is attested from the Neolithic period. From MH onwards the site had become a nucleated settlement of some size, but not large enough to deserve the name of “city” or “town”. Further extended in LH, it was still smaller than Mykenai and Tiryns.
