The Order wasted no time in meeting the new Prime Minister, James Chichester-Clark, to press its views for two hours on issues such as law and order, the reshaping of local government and the franchise, funding for the Catholic Mater Hospital, and plans for the fiftieth anniversary of Northern Ireland. Orange– UUP unity was symbolized by Chichester-Clark ’s Minister of Development, Brian Faulkner. Faulkner at this point maintained a hardline reputation based on his resignation from O ‘Neill ’s cabinet in January 1969. He served on the Orange Grand Committee and attended the June 1969 Grand Lodge sessions, where he was warmly welcomed. Nevertheless, the honeymoon would not last long.
