Over one billion people have access to the Internet and millions of sensors are connected to the Internet currently. The Internet is flooded by mass volumes of data; however, decision‐makers are hungry for information and knowledge to help them make the correct decision. This is the real situation faced by today's knowledge workers. To solve this problem, information technology needs to be fully utilized by integrating databases in various government agencies and large volumes of information and knowledge in the academic sector to develop an intelligent decision‐support system. Intelligent spatial decision‐support systems (ISDSSs) are the major research direction in geographic information science. This entry reviews the development of the spatial decision‐support system and introduces the ontology and multi‐agent system technology that is the major technology base for the ISDSS. Finally, a multi‐agent knowledge‐oriented cyberinfrastructure is proposed for the development of ISDSSs.
