Pliny the Elder (23 or 24–79 CE ) is known for his monumental Natural History ( Naturalis Historia ), the earliest encyclopedia surviving from antiquity. His nephew, Pliny the Younger, set him a lasting memorial in a letter vividly describing the Elder Pliny's heroic death during the eruption of Vesuvius ( Ep . 6.16).
