As the discipline of applied linguistics research flourishes and applied linguists make efforts towards solving language‐based issues we face in the real world, its growth has highlighted a central proposition: How to ethically conduct our research while making contributions to others and society. This chapter provides overall ethical guidance that applies to qualitative and quantitative approaches as well as their combination. Some sections may apply more strongly to one type of research than another, so we can apply the most appropriate guidance to ethical choices we will have to make in our own research. This chapter follows critical developments of ethics in roughly chronological order including the history of the human subject, ethical principles, and relevant theories of ethics and concludes with research situation discussions in applied linguistics.
