The wild eastern Vitis vinifera sylvestris was domesticated and the first wine made ca. 6000 bce in Neolithic Transcaucasia and eastern Anatolia. Wine played important roles as a safe drink (normally mixed with water) as well as in religion, medicine, and trade. The Phoenicians introduced viticulture around the Mediterranean Basin and the Ancient Greeks made wine a drink accessible to all levels of society. The Romans perfected the technology for its mass production and expanded viticulture away from the Mediterranean coast.
