This entry traces the development of Moscow from its origins as a provincial, medieval East Slavic village to its status as the capital of the Russian Federation, one of today's most populous world capitals. It considers the central position of the Russian Orthodox Church in the city's premodern history as well as the role of the Communist Party in the twentieth century. In addition to urban improvements related to housing and transportation, the article notes key cultural developments across centuries.
