The notion of competence provides a basis to discuss the link between task requirements and intellectual abilities. In translation and interpreting, competence is used to describe the traits and abilities necessary for undertaking translation/interpreting tasks or projects. However, the definition of translation/interpreting competence is mixed as a result of different aims and approaches of investigation. To date, competence has been investigated by (a) abstracting or experimenting on characteristics of expert performance, (b) comparing the gaps between novice and expert translators/interpreters, and (c) observing knowledge and skills utilized in specific translation/interpreting scenarios. This entry reviews studies that conceptualize translation and interpreting competences and discusses how the investigations were oriented toward different goals and their conclusions thereof. Translation and interpreting are treated as distinct modes of cross‐language transposition, and, therefore, competence pertaining to them is considered, respectively.
