Within the study of language for specific purposes (LSP), writing has been an important area of focus, as written communication is often used to carry out important tasks in business, academic, and professional domains. Writing in these domains is investigated by researchers from four complementary perspectives: descriptions of texts, descriptions of contexts of production, descriptions of learning, and critical analyses of text production and use. Writing is taught in LSP through the use of consciousness‐raising approaches such as genre‐ and corpus‐based pedagogy that are adaptable to different LSP settings, as well as critical approaches seeking to extend students' repertoire of abilities by engaging them in academic tasks while helping them to reflect on and interrogate the social conditions that the tasks assume and reinforce. In addition, content‐based writing pedagogy, primarily found in academic contexts, helps students simultaneously learn content and language.
