The general structural equation model, the topic of this chapter, represents a synthesis of these two model types. It consists of a measurement model that specifies the relation of observed to latent variables and a latent variable model that shows the influence of latent variables on each other. The chapter topics are as follows: model specification, implied covariance matrix, identification, estimation and model evaluation, standardized and unstandardized coefficients, means and equation constants, comparing groups, missing values, and the decomposition of effects in path analysis. It illustrates methods to estimate standardized coefficients, constant terms in equations, and the means of latent variables. The chapter covers the methods of comparing parameters across independent groups and of handling missing values. Finally it demonstrates a procedure to decompose the total, direct, indirect, and specific effects that applies to any type of structural equation model.
