Abolitionism refers to a movement in Atlantic history to end the institution of slavery. Encompassing a wide range of reformers and ideas (including gradual emancipation, compensated abolition, and even slave rebellion), abolitionism was a contentious part of western nation‐building efforts during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
