This entry discusses the integration of critical applied linguistics (CALx) and corpus linguistics (CL) approaches in language and discourse research and their applications in teaching contexts. CALx explores the connection between specific language conditions and broader societal structures, while CL analyzes patterns of language use through the use of large collections of language data. CALx also includes research on critical discourse analysis (CDA), which aims to uncover underlying power structures and ideologies in discourse. Critiques of both CL and CALx are presented, emphasizing the need for researchers to be critical and reflexive in their use of these approaches to ensure a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of language use in society. By integrating these approaches, a more critical analysis of language can be achieved, allowing existing power relations to be challenged and potentially facilitating significant social transformations. Examples of research studies that have used CL approaches in CALx to analyze how language is employed to construct and reinforce social identities and discourses of power and domination are presented. Finally, applications of CL in the critical language classroom are provided.
