Developmental science increasingly speaks in embodied, ecological, and relational terms, yet many of its operative constructs still rely on hidden inner structures. This article responds by reconstructing Piaget’s distinction between operative schemes and figurative schemas in explicitly embodied-ecological terms. Operative schemes are recurrent cognitive pathways through which activity is carried forward; figurative schemas are realised affordances within canalised cognitive pathways of participation. On this basis, the article proposes scheme–schema–affordance formations as the smallest analytically useful unit of developmental analysis and an endosystemic extension of Bronfenbrenner’s model focused on the organised teaching-learning moment. Reflexive abstraction is presented as reorganising cognitive pathways, canalisation deepening them through revisiting, memory as the renewed availability of a cognitive pathway, and transfer its uptake in a new context. Illustrated through early mathematical activity, the argument concludes with a pedagogical claim: teaching is best understood as the cultivation of affordance-rich niches through which more differentiated cognitive pathways of learning and development become available.
