This research investigated the evolution and current state of the Metaverse through a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of literature from 2019 to early 2026. The research analyzed scholarly articles, conference papers, and books to identify key trends, influential contributors, and seminal publications that have shaped the Metaverse discourse. Initially rooted in science fiction, the Metaverse has evolved into a dynamic digital ecosystem with global relevance. In the ASEAN context, the Metaverse holds particular significance, as it presents unique opportunities and challenges for regional economic, social, and technological development. The findings highlight the evolution of the Metaverse, key emerging trends, and the current state of research in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies, with a focus on how these developments are impacting ASEAN nations. Furthermore, the research examined critical challenges, ethical considerations, and the implications of the Metaverse for privacy, security, user experience, and societal issues within ASEAN countries. The originality and value lie in its extensive bibliometric analysis, offering a fresh and detailed perspective on the academic landscape surrounding the Metaverse. By identifying influential research and key themes, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the Metaverse's role and impact, particularly in the ASEAN region. The insights gained are invaluable for researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders in ASEAN, enabling informed decision-making in a rapidly evolving digital environment. This research provides a comprehensive foundation for future research and development within the region, addressing the growing importance of the Metaverse at the ASEAN level.
