This article introduces this special issue on African Environmental Epistemologies: Challenging, Complementing and (Re)Constituting Environmental Communication. We begin by reviewing the origins of the special issue in a spotlight panel at the 2023 Conference on Communication and Environment (COCE). Next, we highlight some themes that emerged across the articles collected in the issue. These include: the intersection of communication and environmental studies, the shift toward African knowledges and African environmental knowledges within that, and the political economy of (environmental) communication on the continent. We conclude by suggesting Pan-African political economy as means of exploring questions epistemic sovereignty relative to environments for the global majority in Africa.
