In an Internet survey, 1,050 same-sex attracted adolescents from Germany and the United States described one of the initial developmental tasks of sexual identity formation: dealing with one's own feelings and desires that emerge during puberty. Qualitative content analysis allowed for a description of the process from the adolescents' point of view. It is claimed that Europe offers a more tolerant social environment (macrosystem) than the United States. Results show that cultural changes do not, yet, affect how adolescents view their sexual orientations. High frequencies of negative self-perceptions reported by same-sex attracted adolescents stress the need for early sexual education to enhance changes within microsystems (families,peer-groups, etc.) in both countries
